Cork City have signed former Huddersfield Town player Rónán Coughlan from Bray Wanderers.

The forward had signed for the Seagulls for the 2018 season but has departed the club following the announcement that the Wicklow club were unable to guarantee the payment of player wages.

“I’m delighted to be here and can’t wait to get started on Friday in the friendly versus Burnley,” said Coughlan speaking to his new club’s website.

“I’ve trained the last few days and now I’m really looking forward to it,” said the 22 year old.

“Training has definitely been a different level. Obviously at Bray we only trained twice a week, so the boys here are obviously a lot fitter. I am just going to keep my head down and work hard and hopefully get a chance.

"After training I’ve been doing extra running and hopefully I will get a few minutes on Friday against Burnley and then I can kick on from there.”

Coughlan has signed with the current League of Ireland champions until the end of the 2019 season and manager John Caulfield spoke positively about his new signing.

“Ronan is a young player who has just come back from Huddersfield. He played plenty of games with Bray this season, so he is used to our league. He has good ball control, is a great finisher and can hold up the play well.

“He will come into our squad and give us a different dimension to Graham Cummins and Josh O’Hanlon. He was released by Bray last week and has been in training with us the last number of days.

"It is a good fit for us. Obviously with a few players going out, it came within our budget, so we are very happy with that,” Caulfield said.

“The important thing is that he is here to stay for 18 months and he is hoping to prove himself. It is a great opportunity and we are looking forward to Friday night against Burnley, where he will start, and our fans will get an opportunity to look at him.

“Ronan is a different type of player (to Graham & Josh), he can play in a number of positions, he can play up top and he can play in the hole. Ronan is very skilful and a really good finisher.

"We are hoping he will give the other lads a bit of competition up front and have an impact on the last 3 months of the season.”

Coughlan could make his debut for the Leesiders face Burnley in a friendly on Friday night in Turner’s Cross (kick-off 7pm).
