Spain out of the World Cup as hosts Russia prevail on penalties

2010 World Cup winners Spain are out after hosts Russia marched on to the quarter-finals after upsetting the odds with a penalty shoot-out win in Moscow.

Stanislav Cerchesov's side will face the winner of Croatia and Denmark, having prevailed 4-3 in the shoot-out after the game finished 1-1 following extra time.

Russia came in on the back of a heavy 3-0 defeat to Uruguay in their final group game, and little seemed to have changed when Sergie Ignashevich put through his own net after 12 minutes.

Artem Dzyuba scored a penalty four minutes before half time, however, and a committed defensive performance saw the hosts through to penalties.

Russia scored all four of their penalties, while Atletico Madrid's Koke and Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas saw their spot-kicks saved by Igor Akinfeev.

Croatia and Denmark face off at 7pm Irish time in order to determine who meets the hosts in Sochi on Saturday night.
