Ronaldo and Messi crash out as Uruguay and France set up quarter-final showdown

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will play no further part in FIFA World Cup 2018 after Portugal and Argentina were both eliminated at the last 16 stage on Saturday.

France set up a tantalising quarter-final date with Uruguay as Kylian Mbappé and Edinson Cavani each scored braces to end the pair's title hopes.

One or the other has held the Ballon d'Or or FIFA Best Player for each of the past ten years, but both may now retire without adding world football's most prestigious trophy to their cabinet.

In the early game, Argentina went down to a 4-3 defeat to Mbappé-inspired France in one of the most entertaining games of the tournament to date.

Mbappé won an early penalty, which Antoine Griezmann converted, before goals from Angel di Maria and Gabriel Mercado put the Albiceleste in front.

Benjamin Pavard drew France level before Mbappé scored twice in quick succession. Sergio Aguero pulled a goal back in injury time but there wasn't time to force extra time.

In the later evening kick-off, Cavani scored twice as Uruguay deservedly overcame the European champions Portugal.

Cavani headed home Luis Suarez's cross in the seventh minute, before Pepe equalised against the run of play ten minutes into the second half.

Portugal had parity for just seven more minutes as Cavani doubled his tally before being forced off with a hamstring injury that threatens to keep him out of the France game.

Sunday will see the other side of that bracket decided, as Spain take on hosts Russia in Moscow, while Croatia face Denmark in Nizhny Novgorod.
