Injury-time goals and VAR drama sees Spain top Group B to set up last 16 showdown with hosts Russia

Injury-time goals in both Group B ties changed the complexion of the knockout stages dramatically as Spain set up a last 16 encounterwith the hosts Russia in Luzhniki.

Portugal will face the more daunting task of facing Uruguay in Sochi after the concession of a controversial late penalty relegated them to second.

Karim Ansarifard converted the spot-kick to make it 1-1, while Iago Aspas scored a last-gasp equaliser to see the Spanish top of the group on goals scored.

It could have been worse for the European champions as Mehdi Taremi had a chance to win the game for Iran and take top spot, but it was to be anguish for the Asian side.

Portugal were on course to qualify as group winners going into added time after Ricardo Quaresma's stunning first-half goal had given them the lead over Iran.

The top seeds Spain, by contrast, were surprisingly behind to already-eliminated Morocco as Khalib Boutaib and Youssef En-Nesyri scored either side of Isco's equaliser.

The whole group changed within 30 seconds as Iran were awarded a penalty following lengthy consultation with VAR, while Aspas fired Spain to the top of the table.
