Peru became the first South American side to exit World Cup 2018 as they fell to a second successive defeat to European opposition against France on Thursday.

Kylian Mbappé's goal 11 minutes before half time proved the difference as Los Incas were once again held scoreless despite creating a high number of chances.

Peru's best chance came while the game was poised at 0-0, with striker Paolo Guerreiro finding space in the box but shooting disappointingly at Hugo Lloris.

It brings to a disappointing end Peru's first World Cup finals appearance in 36 years, when they were also knocked out in the group stages in Spain in 1982.

Los Incas' preparation was hampered this year by the ongoing appeals and counter-appeals over a drug ban issued to captain and top scorer Guerreiro.

The 34-year-old striker was banned for a year after testing positive for cocaine before the ban was reduced, extended and reduced once more on the eve of the finals.

They join Egypt, Morocco and Saudi Arabia in mathematical elimination from the tournament before playing their final game.

Peru finish their World Cup 2018 campaign against Australia on Tuesday, June 26th in Sochi.
