Former Castlebar Celtic manager Damon Kearney takes charge of Sligo Rovers women's under-17

Sligo Rovers have confirmed that Damon Kearney will take charge of their under-17s side for the inaugural Women's National League season.

Experienced coach Kearney has worked as a full-time FAI community development officer for Leitrim, in association with the county council, since 2009.

Kearney was formerly the head coach of Castlebar Celtic's senior Women's National League side and has also been part of Longford Town's senior men's staff.

He has appointed Alan Henry as his assistant coach, as well as goalkeeping coach Adrian Massop and coaches Catherine Hyndman and Michael Flannery.

The under-17 national league kicks off on July 14th, and Sligo have been grouped alongside Athlone Town, Donegal League, Galway, Peamount United and Shelbourne.

“I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to become Sligo Rovers Women’s under-17 head coach,” Kearney told the club's official website.

“The north-west region has been crying out for a pathway for our elite female players and I am delighted Sligo Rovers will lead the way to provide that pathway now at under-17 level and hopefully senior level in the near future.

“The Sligo Rovers women’s football committee have done an incredible job ensuring the structures are in place off the pitch, creating a great environment for our coaching staff.

“The club’s vision is about player development at this age group with a focus on working and educating our players, not just at under-17 level but looking longer term towards preparing them for senior football in the Bit O’ Red colours.

“It is a very exciting time for women’s football in our region and I am looking forward to the season ahead."
