Athlone Town announce Terry Butler as new manager

Athlone Town have announced that Terry Butler, the former assistant to Aaron Callaghan, is to take over managing the club’s first team playing squad for the remainder of the 2018 First Division season.

Since the recent departure of Aaron Callaghan, Butler has stepped in to look after first team affairs.

It has been a disastrous spell for the League of Ireland’s oldest club over the past couple of seasons with the club appearing to be in crisis mode much of the time.

This year is proving to be another tough season for Athlone who have just one point from the ten league matches they have played so far in the First Division.

In a statement released by the club through it’s official social media channels, Athlone Town have announced in addition to Butler’s role that the coaching team of Mitch Whitty and Ciaran Bizzell will continue their partnership at the club as they look to climb their way off the bottom position in the table.

Butler is certainly no stranger to League of Ireland football having been a coach at both St Patrick’s Athletic and Bohemians prior to his move to the Midlands club.

He also enjoyed spells at UCD and NIFL side Carrick Rangers when the Carrickfergus outfit were under the stewardship of Aaron Callaghan.

It will be interesting to see how Butler fares in his first spell as a League of Ireland manager as he looks to turn around the fortunes of the once great Athlone Town in the SSE Airtricity League First Division.

Up next is a tough opening assignment against Drogheda United at the Athlone Town Stadium on Friday evening.

Undoubtedly the aim for Butler and his coaching team will be to make the teamas competitive as possible for the rest of the season as they look to put their poor start to the season behind them.

They are the leakiest side in the First Division but will now be hoping to prove the doubters wrong during the second and third series of games this term under Butler’s managerial leadership.
