Ireland under-19s miss out on Euros following defeat to Spain in Cork

The Republic of Ireland under-19s have missed out on qualification for the European Championships in Switzerland this summer following a 3-0 defeat to Spain.

The defending champions advanced to the finals tournament with their second win of the elite qualifying round thanks to a brace from Rosa Marquez Baena and one from Carla Piqueras Bautista.

Dave Connell's side came into the game knowing they'd need at least a draw to keep their qualification hopes alive following a 1-1 draw with Austria on Monday

Spain had beaten Turkey 5-0 at the Mardyke late on Monday evening and, following Austria's draw with Turkey beforehand, knew a win would be enough to clinch first place.

They defended well in the first half but fell behind to a smart finish from Marquez Baena four minutes from the break.

And two goals in six second-half minutes, from Marquez Baena again before Piqueras Bautista sealed the win, ensured the Spanish will top the group regardless of the outcome of their final game.

Ireland face Turkey in their final group game at the Cross on Sunday afternoon while Austria meet Spain at St Colman's Park in Cobh. Both games kick off at 3pm.
