Former Wexford Youths midfielder Ruth Fahy announces her retirement

Former Women's National League-winning midfielder Ruth Fahy has announced her retirement from senior football.

The Galway native hasn't played for almost two years since rupturing anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in action for Wexford Youths.

The 29-year-old have made the move from her native Galway WFC the previous year and was part of the Youths squad that won a domestic league, cup and league cup treble in 2016.

Previously she represented the Galway League in the 2008-09 Champions League, narrowly missing out on qualification for the finals.

The former Salthill Devon youth was also a member of the Castlebar Celtic side that competed in the inaugural Women's National League in 2011.

She has hoped to make her return from injury at some point this season but, citing new work commitments, she feels the time is right to step away from the playing side of the game.

Fahy continues to write extensively about the Women's National League and women's football in Ireland in the national media.

“I've learned over the years to trust my gut instinct and I am following that feeling again this week,” Fahy wrote in her Irish Daily Mirror column.

“It's actually a relief. The indecision that was hanging over me about returning this season was becoming debilitating.

“Every good quality that I have has probably come from football. I owe it a lot and I am to give back as much as I can.”
