Watch: Sean Boyd scores screamer as Shamrock Rovers bow out of Atlantic Cup

Shamrock Rovers striker Sean Boyd scored a spectacular long-range goal as the Hoops faced Swedish side IF Norkopping in the 3/4th place play-off at the Atlantic Cup in the Algarve.

Boyd had been pressed into the thankless role of the lone striker in a ten-man Rovers side after fellow striker Gary Shaw had been dismissed for reckless use of the arm in the first half.

The Hoops were already a goal down at that point and were forced to chase the game with a one-man deficit for an hour following Shaw's indiscretion.

And it was Malahide native Boyd who brough the sizeable travelling contingent to their feet with an audacious lob that caught Norkopping stopper David Mitov Nilsson out.

Boyd's intervention wasn't quite enough, however, despite taking the game to penalties as Stephen Bradley's side were defeated 4-1 in the shootout.

With the senior side recovering from a fruitful three-game stop-over in Portugal, a youthful Rovers side will face amateur side St Mochta's in the Leinster Senior Cup tonight.
