Mick Leahy swaps Sligo for Inchicore as defender joins Saints

Centre-half Mick Leahy has put pen to paper with St. Patrick’s Athletic for 2018. The Dubliner, who turns 29 in April, previously spent time with UCD, Limerick and most recently, Sligo Rovers.

Leahy was a key figure in securing the Bit o’ Reds Premier Division status, playing in 27 games while he found the net four times, including a brace away at Bray Wanderers in May.

He played all 90 minutes as Ger Lyttle’s side secured their status with a final day stalemate against Drogheda United.

Leahy played underage football with Belvedere before signing with the Students aged 18. Martin Russell gave him his senior bow in 2009 and he was reunited with Russell during an injury ravaged spell at Limerick in 2014.

A return to Belfield for 2015 gave him the opportunity of playing First Division football, but also four European ties, as the Students were knocked out of the Europa League at the hands of Slovan Bratislava.

Liam Buckley adds Leahy to Kevin Toner, Thomas Byrne and a quartet of former Shamrock Rovers players – Dean Clarke, Ryan Brennan, Simon Madden, James Doona – as off-season additions.

The Saints face Cabinteely in a pre-season friendly in Marley Park this Saturday.
