Striker Gareth McCaffrey returns to Drogheda United from Cabinteely

Drogheda United announced their seventh signing for the 2018 season on Friday afternoon with the confirmation that striker Gareth McCaffrey has rejoined the club from Cabinteely.

McCaffrey's return to the club follows news announced earlier that Colm Deasy and Jake Hyland had signed new deals, while Chris Lyons arrived from Shelbourne.

The forward first joined Drogheda on loan from Shamrock Rovers mid-way through the 2016 First Division season, making his debut away to Shelbourne in July.

He would go on to become a key player in the remainder of the season, scoring six goals in 12 games as Drogheda earned promotion to the Premier Division via the play-offs, with McCaffrey scoring in both legs against Cobh Ramblers.

McCaffrey made the move to United Park permanent ahead of the 2017 season and made fifteen appearances in all competitions, scoring twice in the league – in the opening day victory against Galway United and in a 1-1 draw at home to Sligo Rovers.

However, he departed the club in May by mutual consent and signed for Cabinteely in the First Division.

McCaffrey now returns to Drogheda, as they prepare for a return to the First Division, under new manager Tim Clancy.

Speaking to extratime.ie, McCaffrey expressed his delighted at rejoining the Boynesiders.

"I'm delighted to be back at Drogheda United. I'd like to thank the chairman Fiachra Kierans for his continued support throughout the last year," McCaffrey said.

"After speaking with Tim Clancy, I can't wait to begin pre-season and hopefully 2018 will be a successful one for the club!"
