Finn Harps sign defender Aidan Friel from Longford Town

Finn Harps have completed the signing of right-back Aidan Friel from Longford Town.

Harps manager Ollie Horgan sees Friel as a replacement for Ethan Boyle, who moved to Shamrock Rovers in November and also believes Friel’s league experience will be a big plus for his side.

“Aidan has been playing League of Ireland football for the past three years so that is a big plus for me that he has agreed to sign,” Horgan told the club's media team.

“He’s a right-back and with Ethan Boyle gone it’s important that we got experienced cover in for that position.”

The 26-year-old began his League of Ireland career at Athlone Town in 2015, after signing from Strabane Athletic.

His league debut for Eddie Wallace’s Athlone came against Harps and Friel went onto make 17 First Division appearances in 2015.

Friel then signed for Wexford Youths, who had just been promoted to the Premier Division and made 26 league appearances in 2016.

Following Wexford’s relegation after a 3-2 aggregate play-off defeat to Drogheda United, Friel made the move to Longford Town for 2017.

Friel is the fifth player to sign up to the Finn Harps squad for next season after caotain Ciaran Coll, Paddy McCourt, Gareth Harkin and Shane Blaney.
