Saints sign exciting winger James Doona from Shamrock Rovers

St Patrick's Athletic have confirmed the signing of exciting young midfielder James Doona from cross-city rivals Shamrock Rovers.

The winger had been linked with English National League side Tranmere Rovers after leaving Rovers at the end of last season but has opted for a club closer to home.

19-year-old Doona found gametime difficult to come by in his first full season as a senior player in Tallaght but still managed to score six goals in total, four in the league. He made just four league starts but 14 appearances from the bench.

The Dubliner will be in good company in Inchicore as his teammate last season, Simon Madden, has also made the move, while also he's played with Barry Murphy and Killian Brennan in Tallaght.

"Everyone at the club would like to welcome James into the group as we're delighted he'll link up with us for the coming season,” said manager Liam Buckley.

“Considering he is only 19, James has a number of appearances under his belt and he impressed on numerous occasions last year. We know that not only can he perform at this level, but he has the potential to improve as well.

"He's a talented midfielder who we feel can complement the group we're putting together. We feel he'll be a signing the supporters can really be excited about as he is a local lad as well.

“It is important that we retain a core group of players who can identify with the club, the local area and our supporters so we are delighted to secure James' signature for next season."

St Patrick's Athletic squad for 2018: Michael Barker, Ian Bermingham, Killian Brennan, Ryan Brennan, Conan Byrne, Thomas Byrne, Lee Desmond, James Doona, Christy Fagan, Owen Garvan, Graham Kelly, Simon Madden, Brian Maher, Barry Murphy, Ian Turner.
