Tim Clancy makes first signings as Drogheda manager as Farragher, Kane and Sean Brennan pen new deals

New Drogheda United manager Tim Clancy has begun to build his squad for 2018 with the re-signing of defenders Conor Kane and Kevin Farragher along with midfielder Sean Brennan.

Teenager Kane signed for Drogheda ahead of their return to Premier Division last season, having previously played for St Patrick’s Athletic at underage level.

Kane competed with Stephen Dunne for the starting place at left-back last season and went on to make 25 appearances in all competitions for the Boynesiders.

Drogheda’s 2016 play-off hero Kevin Farragher has also signed back with the Louth side for the 2018 season.

The centre-back began 2016 at Athlone Town but left midway through the season and joined Drogheda in July, linking up with then-manager Pete Mahon, whom he had worked with at Malahide United in 2015.

Farragher went on to make a major contribution in Drogheda’s promotion push in the second half of the 2016 season, scoring once in the league in a 3-1 win over Waterford United.

However, it was in the second leg of the play-off final against Wexford Youths that Farragher’s biggest contribution came.

Drogheda, 2-0 down from the first leg completed a dramatic turnaround, winning the second leg 3-0 to earn promotion with Farragher, a first-half substitute for the injured Lloyd Buckley, scoring Drogheda’s second and clearing a late Wexford chance off the line.

Farragher signed back at United Park again ahead of the 2017 season but an injury-plagued season saw him make just 10 appearances in all competitions, mostly towards the end of the season.

Sean Brennan has also signed back with his hometown club. Brennan first played for Drogheda in the 2012 season after spending three and a half seasons with Monaghan United.

He then moved to Shelbourne for the 2013 season before signing for Athlone Town in 2014, where he played in 31 of their 33 league games.

Brennan then signed for Drogheda in 2015, making 26 appearances and scoring once, in a 4-2 win over Bray Wanderers.

Drogheda were relegated to the First Division after suffering a 5-3 defeat to Shamrock Rovers on the last day of the 2015 season.

Sean signed back for Drogheda in 2016 and scored five times in 23 First Division matches before scoring the first of Drogheda’s three goals in the second leg of the play-off final against Wexford.

He again signed back with Drogheda for the 2017 season and played 24 times in all competitions (23 league, 1 cup), scoring twice in the league – in 4-1 defeats to Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians.
