Former Kilmarnock defender Tim Clancy appointed Drogheda United manager

Drogheda United have announced Tim Clancy as their new manager following Pete Mahon’s resignation a fortnight ago.

 

The 33-year-old Trim native will work alongside former Sligo Rovers manager Dave Robertson, who has been appointed as the club’s director of football.

 

Clancy had been on the books at Bray Wanderers as a player last season, having signed for them midway through the 2016 season.

 

The defender made 13 league appearances in the second half of the 2016 season for the Seagulls before playing 23 times in the league last season.

 

He began his senior career in England, playing for Millwall in 2013 before spending three seasons in non-league at Walton & Hersham, Weymouth and Fisher Athletic.

 



Kilmarnock then came calling and Clancy signed for the Scottish outfit in 2007, staying with Killie until 2011.

 

He would go on to play for Motherwell, Hibernian and St. Johnstone in Scotland before returning home to Ireland to sign for Shamrock Rovers in 2015.

 

Clancy made just three league appearances for the Hoops before moving on loan to Robertson’s Sligo Rovers until the end of the 2015 season.

 



He scored once in his eight league appearance for Sligo in 2015 before making the move permanent in 2016. However, he made just seven appearances in the league for Sligo in 2016 before making the move to Bray.

 

This will be Clancy’s first managerial job and he will be assisted by former Peterborough United and Sligo Rovers manager Robertson, who will act as Director of Football.

 

 

Robertson was academy manager at Peterborough when he was promoted to caretaker manager of the first team in February 2015 following Darren Ferguson’s sacking.

 

He was appointed manager of Peterborough on a three-year contract in May 2015 but was sacked in September after one win in six games at the start of the 2015/16 League One season.

 

Robertson was appointed as Sligo manager in November of the same year, leading Sligo to a fifth-place finish in 2016.

 

However, after one win in seven at the beginning of last season, Sligo parted company with Robertson and he will now begin his new role with the Boynesiders.
