Cabinteely sign goalkeeper McGuinness from Drogheda United

Cabinteely have announced the signing of goalkeeper Stephen McGuinness from Drogheda United.

The 22-year-old joins up with Pat Devlin, who he played under at Bray Wanderers after impressing in the two years he spent at Drogheda.

He first played with Bray Wanderers’ U19 side between 2011 and 2013 before making his breakthrough to the first team in 2013 in a Leinster Senior Cup fixture against Tolka Rovers.

It was in 2014 that McGuinness made his league debut against UCD, as a substitute for Shane Redmond who had been sent off. McGuinness went on to make 27 league appearances that season, also winning Bray’s Player of the Year award for the season.

He continued as Bray’s first choice goalkeeper in 2015, playing the first 17 league games before injury ruled him out for the rest of the season.

McGuinness then made the move to Drogheda and was a key figure for the Boynesiders’ in 2016 as they earned promotion to the Premier Division via the play-off.

He would continue in the same form in 2017, winning Drogheda’s Player of the Year award despite the Louth side being relegated back to the First Division.

Pat Devlin told the club’s official website of his delight at signing the highly sought-after goalkeeper.

“I am delighted to have signed Stephen, he is a very experienced goalkeeper with first team experience at Bray and Drogheda and is a great addition to the team that we are building for next season,” Devlin said.

McGuinness also explained his reasoning for joining Cabinteely, believing Cabinteely are a club moving in the right direction.

“I’m delighted to be here, it feels excellent to have it sorted. Cabo have a lot of potential, the club is going in the right direction. I can’t wait to get started now,” McGuinness said.
