Garry Comerford re-signs for Waterford ahead of 2018 campaign

One of Waterford’s heroes from the triumphant promotion push of 2017, Garry Comerford, has been confirmed as another part of the Blues jigsaw ahead of their highly anticipated return to the Premier Division in 2018.

Playing an integral role in the midfield engine room for Alan Reynolds’ men last season with 25 appearances, the Blues have managed to entice the Laois man back for another season at the RSC despite interest from England and double winners Cork City.

Speaking on his decision-making process in confirming his stay on Suirside for 2018, Comerford has said that he was only delighted to be trusted with the chance to prove himself in a higher division.

“Personally, I think the 2017 season was my best season to date. I am delighted to have played a major part in the club’s promotion to the Premier Division. I am really happy that the management team has shown trust in me to step up to the next level.

“Last season was a fantastic year for the players and the fans. The support we received throughout the campaign home and away was unbelievable. A club with great history, it’s great to see Waterford FC back competing at the top in this country.

“I am delighted to re-sign for the 2018 season. I believe the club has great plans for the future and I am looking forward to playing a part in those plans. Waterford FC staff and fans were great to me from the start and made me feel at home. This made my decision to re-sign a lot easier.”

Despite last season’s heroics, Comerford is well aware of the need for the club to push on as they look to consolidate their position among the country’s footballing elite.

“However, we can’t dwell on last season’s heroics. We must push on and prove that we can compete at the top level. It’s going to be a massive step-up and I look forward to the challenge. With the squad, the management is putting together I have no doubt we can compete.”

Also adding on his midfielder’s decision to re-sign ahead of the 2018 campaign was First Team Coach Alan Reynolds who has spoken of his delight in keeping one of his mainstays from last season’s campaign.

“I’m pleased that Garry has decided to re-sign for us ahead of the Premier Division season. He is a player who developed well as the season progressed in 2017 and he always showed a great attitude on and off the field. I feel that he fitted in very well last season and played a massive role in getting us promoted.”

Reynolds also had some complementary words for his midfield general who’s work often went unnoticed in the middle of the park.

“He was one of the top midfield players in the First Division and a lot of his work went unnoticed. I said before he joined last season that I thought that the fans would like what they saw in Garry and I think that my confidence was borne out.”

Reynolds, who has been exceptionally busy during this off-season in securing a Premier Division squad for next season’s campaign, has indicated that this is a step in the right direction to achieve this.

“I’m delighted that we’re continuing to build a squad that is more than capable of competing in the Premier Division. These are exciting times for us all now as we look forward to the competing in the top division and having Garry on board represents another vital step in our squad building for 2018.”
