David Webster signs for Waterford

Waterford have continued to strengthen their squad ahead of their return to the Premier Division with the signing of former Shamrock Rovers central-defender David Webster.

After making a total of 95 appearances for the Hoops, the 28-year-old Dublin native has put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the Premier Division’s free-spending new boys.

Speaking on his decision to swap Tallaght Stadium for the RSC, Webster has said that he is looking forward to getting involved with such an ambitious project next season in the South-East.

“People I have talked to over the last few weeks have spoken highly of the club, the fans and the set up, so it is an excellent opportunity for me to be part of it all next season. After having a couple of chats with Pat Fenlon, it was clear the club has high ambitions, so I’m excited to be a part of those.

“The club had a very successful year last season and I’m hoping I can add and contribute to that success on the pitch and in the dressing room.”

However, Webster is not anticipating an easy route into the Waterford starting eleven, acknowledging the strength of the current crop of players at the RSC.

“First and foremost, I want to play. I know I will have to work hard to get into the team because this group of players were magnificent last season, winning the league with games to spare but I’m excited to take on that challenge.”

Given that, Webster has pledged his commitment to the cause in saying that he will represent the club with 100% commitment in every game while at the Blues.

“The fans will see a player who is 100% committed every time he puts the Waterford shirt on.”

Also having his say on the deal was First Team Head Coach Alan Reynolds who has spoken of his delight on managing to get the deal over the line.

“We went and watched Dave play a couple of times before the end of last season and he is a player who really ticks a lot of boxes for us as we try to build our defence. He is a commanding centre half and he is a leader on and off the pitch.

“He has shown real consistency at the top level over the last few seasons and I’m looking forward to getting to work with him ahead of the new campaign.”
