Waterford youngster Dean Walsh signs new deal for Premier Division return

Waterford have today confirmed that 20-year-old striker Dean Walsh has signed on for the 2018 season at the RSC.

With Kenny Browne and Paul Keegan confirmed as part of the First Division Champions in recent days, Walsh becomes the ninth man to sign on for next season's campaign so far.

Speaking on his decision to extend his time at the club, Walsh said that he is excited to represent his local club in the Premier Division next season.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for me and I’m delighted that the club has faith in me to be part of its plans going forward,” he told Waterford's official website.

“I’m very happy to commit for 2018 which promises to be a very exciting period for the club.”

Despite the youngster predominantly making appearances off of the bench for the Blues last season, Walsh spoke of his delight having been involved in such a successful campaign.

“It was great to be able to chip in with four goals last season. The support was amazing and being from Waterford, it was brilliant to see the fans really get behind us.

“To win promotion to the Premier Division was great for everyone but we need to move on now and build on what we’ve started.”

However, Walsh is well aware of the major step up in quality next season but is looking forward to grasping the opportunity with both hands.

“I’m under no illusion that I’ll have to work harder but I’m grateful to get the chance. I have always supported the club and to get the chance to represent it in the top division now is something that really excites me.”

Also speaking on the deal was Waterford first team coach Alan Reynolds, who said that he is delighted to give the former Waterford under-19 star the opportunity to develop at the club following a promising First Division campaign last season.

“Dean showed a knack for scoring goals in the First Division when called upon and is fully deserving of an opportunity to develop further with the club going forward.

“Dean is another promising local lad who is willing to learn, and we see a role for him in the squad as we prepare for the Premier Division.”
