Striker Greg Moorhouse signs new deal with Sligo Rovers

Sligo Rovers this Friday announced that striker Greg Moorhouse has extended his contract with the Bit o’ Red for the 2018 season.

The striker joined Sligo from Glenavon in July and was an immediate hit with fans, and his finish to the 2017 season impressed manager Gerard Lyttle enough to reward him with a new deal.

Moorhouse joined the Lurgan Blues in 2016 after winning two FAI Intermediate Cups with Crumlin United, and had a month-long trial at Coventry City before joining the Bit o' Red.

"I've really enjoyed it here,”Moorhouse told the club's official website.

“Obviously the big thing we had to focus on was staying in the Premier Division and now I want to get a good run at it next year in a full season with the club.

"It's always hard to come into a team in the middle of the season. You want to hit the ground running. I don't really feel I did that.

“It's hard to come in and score goals when the team weren't really doing that. It was tough but I thought I put in a few good performances.

"I wasn't helped by one or two injuries as well midway through it. But the few games I was involved I thought I did well and hopefully I can improve on that next year.

"I damaged ribs in Finn Harps and I got an injection to play in Galway. As soon as I got hit there, that was it and it took a few weeks to get back in the team then.

"I was on the bench for Bohs and Shamrock Rovers and then got back in. The few weeks were hit and miss. I'm looking forward to next year to get a proper run and show what I can do.

"It's brilliant to have faith from the manager. The year before when I played against his team I did some damage against them. He obviously remembers that.

“I'm already working now in the off-season with a view to being sharp and ready to go for the start of pre-season. Hopefully I can do some damage next year."

Lyttle added: “Greg has a massive season ahead of him. I’ve spoken to him individually on a couple of occasions that I know what he can do and what player he can become.

“There is a huge potential and he’s a top talent. When he joined us, he didn’t have a proper pre-season after the four weeks trial with Coventry.

“He was disappointed that it didn’t work out over there and I don’t think the Showgrounds saw the best of him in the three months he was here.

“But with every game you could see the potential and I want him to work on his game and the full pre-season with us will be a huge help.

“I like his attitude and his ambition and I’m excited to see what he will produce because I know how good he can be and the talent there.

“His work-rate is excellent, he doesn’t give defenders a minute’s peace. He’s a player to watch in 2018.”

Moorehouse’s signing makes it 9 players the Bit o' Red have signed up for the 2018 season after Rhys McCabe, Kyle Callan-McFadden signed new deals along with five players from last year.
