Captain Pender and stalwart Byrne sign new Bohemians deals

Bohemians have re-signed defenders Derek Pender and Dan Byrne for the 2018 season as manager Keith Long has moved quickly to nail down his best talent.

Captain Pender’s new deal will take him into his seventh season at the club. One of Long’s most consistent performers this term, ‘Detser’ is sure to be a cornerstone of the Bohemians side next season too.

Byrne, a life-long Gypsy, came through the club’s youth system. He had a short spell at Kilbarrack United before returning to Phibsboro in 2013.

Upon his return he was blighted by injuries for a couple of years before really starting to build momentum last season, making 26 appearances for the club. He has gone one better this season with 27.

Long has acted quickly having already signed up Patrick Kavanagh, Oscar Brennan, Rob Cornwall, Fuad Sule, Shane Supple and Warren O’Hora to deals for the coming season.

Many Dalymount regulars had feared that the change in league format could drag Bohemians into the relegation battle but the Gypsies are guaranteed at least a sixth place finish.

They have been all in this season, winning 13 matches, losing 14 and drawing just five.
