Ireland striker Steph Roche faces two months on the sidelines with broken leg

Republic of Ireland striker Steph Roche is set to miss at least two months with a broken leg sustained in last week's World Cup qualifying win over Northern Ireland.

The Girls in Green opened their campaign in Lurgan with a hard-earned 2-0 victory but it came at a cost as the Sunderland striker was stretchered off in the final minute.

28-year-old Roche missed Sunderland's league opener against Reading on Sunday and has revealed she will be required to wear a protective boot for up to eight weeks as she rehabs.

“I'm happy to say my injury isn't as bad as first feared but unfortunately I'll be out of action for a while,” Roche said on Twitter.

“I've a small fracture to my tibia after hyperextending my knee on impact I will be in a brace for up to 6-8 weeks.

“I will be working hard to get myself fit and strong while supporting both Sunderland and Ireland until I'm back on the pitch with them.”

Roche will now miss Ireland's crucial away qualifier against Slovakia and is touch and go for November's visit to the Netherlands as Colin Bell's side look to reach a first major international tournament.
