Watch:- Former Shamrock Rovers keeper scores remarkable winner on his debut in England

Former Shamrock Rovers and Ireland under-19 goalkeeper Mark Travers made a sensational start to his loan spell with Weymouth as he scored the winner against Bishop Stortford from the halfway line.

The Bournemouth AFC stopper sealed a 3-2 win for his side as he lobbed his opposite number from a free kick all of 70 yards out – and later confirmed it was a deliberate attempt on goal.

"It’s my first ever goal and, with my debut for Weymouth, It’s a plus to get the winner,” Travers told the club's official website.

“I didn’t think I’d be saying that at the start of the day!

“I had a look up first time and saw the goalkeeper on about his 18-yard box.

“I had another think about it and said ‘right I’ll give it a go’. I ended up hitting it quite well and it ended up going in, so I was pleased.”

The 18-year-old signed for the Southern League Premier side ahead of the new English league season on a season-long loan.

Dublin-born Travers played for Rovers at under-17 National League level having played the majority of his underage football with Lucan United before signing for the Cherries 12 months ago.

He linked up again with his manager from Bournemouth under-21s, Mark Molesley, who took over the reins at Weymouth during the summer.
