Had Boots Did Travel: Midweek Championship edition (Aug 16 2017)

It's a shortened version of Had Boots Did Travel as the midweek fixtures saw only the English Championship in action.

27 Irish players were in action in total, with an impressive 24 of those as starters. All four goalscorers (and one own goalscorer) ended up on the losing side.

10 of the 27 came through the League of Ireland, including all four who made appearances for Preston North End at Derby County.

Daryl Murphy scored a first-half equaliser for Nottingham Forest at Barnsley but couldn't prevent his side falling to a 2-1 defeat.

Another to score despite ending up on the wrong side of the scoreline was David Meyler, whose injury time penalty couldn't stop Hull City losing 3-2 to Matt Doherty's Wolves.

Aiden O'Brien scored his first of the season for Millwall but was also on the losing side as he and Shaun Williams lost 4-3 to Ipswich Town, for whom David McGoldrick started.

There were Irish scorers at both ends as Reading and Aston Vilal met at the Madjeski Stadium but, alas, both ran out losers.

Conor Hourihane scored and Glenn Whelan got an own goal as Paul McShane and Liam Kelly's Reading won 2-1. New recruit Scott Hogan went off injured in the first half for Villa.

There was a first senior start at Elland Road for defender Conor Shaughnessy and the Galway man helped keep a clean sheet for Leeds United against Fulham.

Darren Randolph and Cyrus Christie both played 90 minutes as Middlesbrough racked up successive victories, this time at the expense of Damien McCrory and Burton Albion.

There were no fewer than five Irish players involved at Pride Park where Richard Keogh's Derby County beat Preston North End 1-0.

Alan Browne and Greg Cunningham started for the Lilywhites while Sean Maguire and Daryl Horgan appeared off the bench.

Wes Hoolahan played 90 minutes as Norwich City registered their first win of the season with a 2-0 scoreline at home to Queen's Park Rangers.

At Hillsborough, Aiden McGeady set up Sunderland's goal and Darron Gibson was a late sub as the visitors held Sheffield Wednesday and Keiren Westwood to a draw.

Josh Cullen played 90 minutes for Bolton Wanderers as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Birmingham City.

Callum O'Dowda was a late substitute for Bristol City as they held Brentford to a 2-2 draw at Griffin Park.

And former Aston Villa teammates Enda Stevens and Samir Carruthers started for Sheffield United as the Blades fell to a 2-0 defeat away to Cardiff City.
