Europa League Review: Rosenborg down Ajax but Midtjylland and AEK Larnaca fall to defeats

It was a tough day in the Europa League for Cork City and Derry City's Europa League conquerors as both Midtjylland and AEK Larnaca fell to defeats in the play-off round.

Rosenborg, who narrowly defeated Dundalk in the Champions League, secured one of their most famous results of recent times, however, as they won away at Ajax.

New signing Samuel Adegbenro, the winger who signed for the club just two days earlier, scored the decisive goal for Rosenborg in the second half at the Amsterdam Arena.

Their Scandinavian cousins Midtjylland have plenty to do in Denmark next week after they fell to a 3-2 defeat in Cyprus against Apollon Limassol.

Alexander Sorloth twice equalised for the Danes after Charalambos Kyriakou and Jander had given the home side the lead, but Ioannis Pittas nabbed a winner in injury time.

AEK Larnaca fared even worse, the Cypriots going down to a 3-1 defeat in the Czech Republic to Viktoria Plzen.

Acoran had given AEK a lead and an away goal after just eight minutes but a brace from Marek Bakos and a third from Daniel Kolar puts the team from the famous beer town in prime position.

FH of Iceland also took an early lead at home to beaten 2010-11 finalists SC Braga through Halldor Ori Bjornsson but Paulinho and Niklas Stojiljkovic completed a second-half turnaround.

BATE Borisov have a lot to do after being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Ukrainian side Oleksandriya, with Yehven Banada cancelling out Mirko Ivanic's early opener.

Andre Silva and Riccardo Montolivo each bagged doubles as AC Milan rolled over Shkendija of Macedonia 6-0 at the San Siro.

And first-half goals from Michael Keane and Magay Gueye saw Everton to a comfortable 2-0 win over Hajduk Split of Croatia at Goodison Park.

In Wednesday's only game, Zakaria Labyad earned Utrecht a 1-0 lead at home to Dundalk's 2016/17 Europa League group opponents Zenit.
