Former Galway United keeper Aaron Dillon signs for Blackburn Rovers

Former Galway United goalkeeper Aaron Dillon has signed for English League One side Blackburn Rovers on a one-year deal with an option of another year after impressing on trial.

The Galway native appeared once on the bench for the Tribesmen – in a 2-0 defeat to Shamrock Rovers in April 2016 – before leaving by mutual consent in the summer.

20-year-old Dillon has spent the past year in England training with Liverpool and Crewe Alexandra, having previously spent time with Witton Albion and Rugby Town in the UK.

He began his League of Ireland career with Athlone Town under-19s in 2014/15 before moving to Witton as a 17-year-old.

He joins Blackburn alongside former Manchester United trainee Charlie Albinson and both will link up with the club's development squad.

Goalkeeping coach Ben Benson said: “It’s been an area we’ve been wanting to look at certainly in my two-and-a-half years here, just to add a little bit more competition to what we already have.

“We have young Andy Fisher as well, who is doing really well, and we’re hopeful for him as well in the long-term.

“Bringing these goalkeepers in gives us an opportunity to possibly look towards loan moves and different pathways for the goalkeepers we already have, as well as giving us competition.

“So we are delighted that the two boys have decided to join us and they’ll go straight into the training group, which gives us a really good working group now, so we’re really happy with that.”
