WFAI Cup Preview: Cork City Women -v- Lakewood Athletic

CORK CITY WOMEN

Cork City open their FAI Cup campaign with a local derby at home to Lakewood Athletic at Bishopstown on Wednesday night (kick-off 6.45pm).

City will aim to bounce back from Saturday's disappointing defeat at Shelbourne, where Christina Dring's opener was negated by two second-half goals for the Reds.

It won't be an easy task up against high-ranking Cork Women's Soccer League side Lakewood, from Ballincollig just outside the city.

““Lakewood will be a good opposition for us as they have had a very good season to date,” City captain Ciara McNamara told the club's media team.

“They will be on a high after just making the Intermediate Cup final.

“There will be an added buzz to this game considering a lot of us would have played against the Lakewood girls over the years however this game will be no different to any other game.

“Despite the loss to Shelbourne at the weekend every one of the girls put in a top class performance and I know we will all want to bring that level of intensity into this game.”

City manager Frank Kelleher has a full squad to choose from with no injury concerns or suspensions looming.

LAKEWOOD ATHLETIC

Lakewood Athletic arrive in Bishopstown on a high having secured a spot in the FAI Intermediate Cup final on Saturday.

A 2-1 win over Benfica, courtesy of a brace from Melissa Finn, earned the Ballincollig side a spot in the final where they'll face Manulla of Mayo.

And they'll see this evening's meeting with Cork City as an opportunity to continue their excellent cup form as well as getting one over on their local rivals.
