St Patrick's Athletic keeper Conor O'Malley joins Peterborough United

St Patrick's Athletic goalkeeper Conor O'Malley has sealed a move to English League One side Peterborough United.

O'Malley has stood out this season for St Pats despite their poor performance this season, winning plaudits from fans and pundits alike, and has been pivotal in their recent revival.

The Westport native has signed a two-year deal and links up with former Pats teammate Chris Forrester at the ABAX Stadium.

23-year-old O'Malley joined the Inchicore based at the start of the 2015 season following a spell with Shamrock Rovers B.

O'Malley starred in recent EA Sports Cups successes for Pats as he was the hero in the 2015 final versus Galway in a penalty shootout and again in the win over Limerick FC in the 2016 final.

“Conor has been tremendous for St. Pats in Ireland for the last year or so and there has been a lot of talk about him,” said Posh manager, the former Northern Ireland player Grant McCann.

“He was brought to my attention by the chairman Darragh MacAnthony and we sent scouts over to watch him.

“He is a down to earth lad, he is 6ft 3, is brave, will come for crosses and really good with his feet and he will keep Jonathan and Josh on their toes.

“Conor knows Chris Forrester very well. Chris has talked to me about him.

“I have a lot of contacts in Ireland and I have spoken to three or four managers in the Irish Premier League and they all tell me he is the top young keeper out there.

“Without me sounding like a broken record and saying loads of clubs were after him, it is the truth, there were Championship clubs in for him and I am really pleased he has decided to join us.”

Speaking about his former man between the sticks with the clubs official media team, Saints manager Liam Buckley was full of praise for his outgoing goalkeeper.

“Conor has been a great professional with us since he joined us in 2015. His form in the last few weeks and months has been fantastic and has recently seen him earn a nomination for Player of the Month”

Buckley was well aware of the lure of English football for O'Malley and wouldn't stand in his way as he looks to make his mark across the water.
