Saints sign midfielder Paul O'Conor from Limerick

St Patrick's Athletic have announced the signing of midfielder Paul O'Conor following his release by Limerick.

29-year-old O'Conor was signed ahead of the 2015 season by former manager Martin Russell but has been deemed surplus to requirements by new boss Neil McDonald.

The Dubliner was publicly placed on the transfer list by the club last Wednesday and the club agreed to cut short his contract when the Saints expressed their interest on deadline day.

He's Liam Buckley's fifth additions of the transfer window and the third central midfielder after Owen Garvan, Killian Brennan, Jordi Balk and O'Conor's former Limerick teammate Ian Turner.

“It was a late-night thing last night,” O'Conor told St Pats TV.

“I got a call late on from the manager. He said he was interested and a deal was made with Limerick. I drove up this morning and training was good – a good tempo.

“I'm looking forward to kicking on and getting involved in matches. When a club like Pats are interesting you've got to be flattered, so I was delighted to come here.”

Buckley added: “Paul was on our radar over the years. He's obviously a proper midfielder from where we're at and can play full-back as well.

“He became available – surprisingly became available – last week from Limerick so we made a couple of enquiries on it. He'll be a really good addition to our group.”

O'Conor began his League of Ireland career with UCD, making his bow during the 2010 season when he racked up 14 appearances.

He appeared in all 36 league games the following year and 30 in 2012 before he made the decision to sign for Drogheda United ahead of the 2013 season.

He helped the club to the final of the FAI Cup, EA Sports Cup and Setanta Sports Cup – losing on each occasion – but did enough in the FAI Cup final against Sligo Rovers to earn a move there.

A season in Sligo was followed by a move to Limerick in 2015, where O'Conor experienced relegation before helping the club to the First Division title the following year.
