Sligo Rovers continue deadline day spree with capture of Vinny Faherty from Galway

Sligo Rovers have announced the signing of striker Vinny Faherty from Galway United until the end of the season.

The Galway native makes the short trip across Connacht having struggled for gametime under new Galway boss Shane Keegan.

Faherty was Galway's top scorer – and the fourth best marksman in the league overall – last season with 12 goals but has managed just two for the Tribesmen so far this term.

He's been frustrated by the goalscoring form of Ronan Murray and Padraic Cunningham and has opted for a fresh start to rediscover his goalscoring form.

The 30-year-old has extensive experience in the league with his hometown club Galway, St Patrick's Athletic, Dundalk and Limerick, having spent time with Ipswich Town as a youth.

"I'm hoping it will be a win/win situation for both parties,” Faherty told the club's official website.

“I'm hungry to get back to goal scoring form and goals are what are needed to get Rovers out of trouble. I'm confident it will work out well for both of us.

"I thought the team played really well on both occasions I’ve seen them, and I noted that Daniel Kearns has a knack of getting in some great crosses, which I would love to be on the end of.

“With that type of service I have no doubt I can get among the goals."

Sligo manager Gerard Lyttle added: "It's important we have a big squad here. I always like to have three strikes. It's good competition. It will give some comeptiton for Raffaele Cretaro as well.

"We've been flogging him too much in my opinion. He shouldn't be playing 90 minutes after 90 minutes. It's not fair on him.

“Vinny is a great player and a great lad. He will have a wee point to prove as well because he hasn't been used as much as what he'd hope with Galway. Hopefully he has come here with a bit of fire and bite.

"I spoke about the experience and the lack of it in the squad. He adds to it because he know the league inside out. He is great in the box and around the box.

"His link-up play and hold-up play is excellent, it's as good as any in the league. I'm really excited about Vinny coming in. For me it's a great addition to the squad."

On-loan Brighton & Hove Albion striker Jonah Ayunga is expected to go the other way, joining Galway United until the end of the season, as part of the deal.
