Derry City sign goalkeeper Tom McDermott from Tottenham Hotspur

Derry City have confirmed the signing of 19-year-old goalkeeper Tom McDermott on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

 

The Strabane native began his career in the Dungannon Swifts youth setup, before earning a move to North London to join Tottenham Hotspurs in 2014.

 

He spent three years with Spurs before being released last month, having featured in just two games for their under-23s during his time in London.

 

The stopper has been capped twice for Northern Ireland at Under-16 level in two 1-0 victories over Finland and England in 2013.

 

He also captaining the Republic of Ireland Under-17s in a 2-1 friendly loss to Croatia back in 2015.

 



He faces stiff competition for the number one spot with Candystripes veteran Ger Doherty and his understudy Eric Grimes ahead of him in the pecking order.

 

McDermott wil be looking to make the most of his short window of time to impress boss Kenny Shiels in order to stake his claim for a spot in the first team.
