Linfield issue lifetime ban to supporter over Glasgow conviction

Linfield have confirmed they have issued a lifetime ban after an individual was convicted of a criminal offence committed during their Champions League tie against Celtic in Glasgow.

A statement issued by the club on Tuesday morning said the club does not believe the individual is a member or season ticket holder and are investigating how they got hold of an away ticket for the game.

The club also confirmed they will continue to cooperate with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) following events at the first leg in Windsor Park that saw the club fined €10,000.

Linfield were also ordered to close part of the stadium for the next European home game after objects were thrown at Celtic player Leigh Griffiths and the pitch was invaded during the 2-0 defeat.

Linfield club statement in full:

At Monday's scheduled Board Meeting the Directors of Linfield Football Club issued a lifetime ban to an individual convicted of a criminal offence in Glasgow during the away leg of our Champions League tie against Celtic.

All indications so far are that this individual was neither a Club Member nor a season ticket holder and we have begun an investigation to establish how they were able to obtain a match ticket.

We continue to cooperate with the Police Service of Northern Ireland over the events of the first leg and are hopeful that individuals who have now been identified will shortly appear before the courts.

Linfield note that the local courts have the power to issue banning orders against individuals convicted of criminal offences in football stadia and would be fully supportive of such punishments being invoked in the event of convictions arising from this match.
