Former Shamrock Rovers striker McCaffrey signs for Cabinteely

Cabinteely have confirmed the signing of striker Gareth McCaffrey following his release from Drogheda United in May.

The Dubliner signed on the dotted line ahead of Friday's Dublin derby with Shelbourne and played a key role off the bench as he supplied the pass for Jack Watson's injury-time winner.

McCaffrey began the season with Drogheda having impressed on loan from Shamrock Rovers last season but chose to leave the club by mutual consent after less than three months.

The 21-year-old scored the only goal in the Boynesiders' opening day win away at Galway United and scored the second of his two Premier Division goals in a 1-1 draw at home to Sligo Rovers.

He began his senior career with Scottish side Hibernians after joining from schoolboy outfit Stella Maris but left without making an appearance.

McCaffrey linked up with his former Hibernian boss Pat Fenlon at Shamrock Rovers ahead of the 2015 season and made 15 league appearances, scoring once in a 1-1 draw with Bohemians.

After finding gametime limited under Fenlon and successor Stephen Bradley, McCaffrey joined Drogheda on loan midway through the 2016 season.

He was part of Pete Mahon's side that won promotion at the first attempt with play-off victories over Cobh Ramblers, in which he scored in both legs, and Wexford Youths.
