Bohemians sign former Sunderland defender Dan Casey

Bohemians have announced the signing of Republic of Ireland under-19 international Dan Casey following the defender's release by Sunderland.

The Gypsies signed the defender after he impressed on trial during their 2-1 loss to FC United of Manchester on Saturday.

Casey is a St Joseph’s Boys AFC graduate and has been capped at underage level since under-15s level.

The 19-year-old can play as right-back or centre-back and signs for the Phibsborough club after spending four years in the north-east of England.

The defender signed for the Black Cats in 2013 and played up to under-23 level at the Stadium of Light.

“I’ve known Dan since he was with St Joseph’s. He was a very sought-after player before going over to Sunderland,” Bohemians manager Keith Long told the club’s website.

“I’m delighted to sign him. He’s a big, powerful lad. He’s a player who I believe will be a good addition to the squad.

“We’ve got someone coming home who is hungry to succeed and who wants to play.”

The club are awaiting Casey’s international clearance before their new signing will be available for their trip to Ballybofey to face Finn Harps this Friday (kick-off 8pm).
