Eoin McCormack: 'In junior football I had all the time in the world and looked like Lionel Messi'

Ronan Murray and Padraic Cunningham scored excellent goals during Galway United’s 3-1 win over Limerick on Friday night but it was a special night for second-half substitute Eoin McCormack who also got on the scoresheet.

McCormack signed for United last month from Ballinasloe Town and, in just his third appearance for the Tribesmen, the striker scored his first goal for the club.

“It was very good in fairness,” McCormack told extratime.ie after the match.

“It was kind of an easy one to get up and running but it was just very nice to get the first goal scored and hopefully we’ll keep going and I’ll get a few more before the end of the season.”

The striker did have a spell with Athlone Town which came to an end in 2013 but he played Junior football in the intervening period between then and signing for Shane Keegan at Galway United.

He had a major hand in helping his hometown club Ballinasloe Town to both the Connacht Cup and Roscommon and District League Premier Division Cup titles.

McCormack explained the adjustment he’s had to make to playing at a higher level.

“It takes a few weeks to get used to you’ve two or three less seconds on the ball and it’s a faster game.

“I was coming from junior football where I had all the time in the world and I looked like Lionel Messi but I can’t do that now. I haven’t as much time.

“I think I can get up to the fitness level and everything so I’m happy out,” he said.

The 22-year-old has come into Galway United right in the middle of a tense relegation battle but he expressed his optimism about his side’s chances of staying up this season.

“In fairness the belief is huge in this club. Even the supporters and everyone around the club, there’s no negative vibes.

“There’s nothing in training – the training camp is happy and we’re all working hard. It’s just about getting the results now and I think we will. I think we’re going to stay up.”
