League of Ireland Attendances 2017 -- Gameweek 18

The televised game between Cork City and Limerick topped the attendance charts this week with 4,725 turning up to watch the Rebel Army extend their unbeaten run in the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Premier Division. The Cork crowd represented a third of the overall attendance for Gameweek 18.

St Patrick’s Athletic recorded their best crowd of the season as Dublin rivals Bohemians came to visit Inchicore. The Gypsies took all three points from the encounter as 2,077 watched the Saints fall to their ninth loss of the season and drop to the foot of the Premier Division table.

Drogheda United welcomed local rivals Dundalk to United Park and, after being reduced to ten men, the Drogs ended up on the back of a six nil defeat.  A season best crowd of 1,691 was there to witness the home side’s ninth loss of the campaign.

In the First Division Waterford’s attendance figures remain well above the rest. 1,245 turned up at the RSC for the visit of Cabinteely. It may be the lowest crowd figure so far this season for the Blues but to put that into perspective, the top eight best attended games in the lower tier are all home games for Waterford.

All ten attendances this week are based on official figures provided by the clubs.

The Gameweek as a whole recorded a total attendance of 14,303 with an average gate of 1,430 (8th of 18). The Premier Division average was 2,042 (7th of 18) and the First Division average was 513 (7th of 16).

In the mid-season attendance review article last week, we forecast a season total of 439,890 based on the game average to date (1,419) being maintained. One Gameweek on and the average has been maintained (over the average by 11). The League of Ireland total crowd count to date this season is 245,525. 98,720 is required to attend the remaining fixtures in order to post a better attendance than last season which means an average of 721 per game. The 2017 season is on track for posting better attendance numbers than last.
