Shay Given released by Premier League Stoke City

Shay Given's long Premier League career may have come to an end after the former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper was released at the end of his Stoke City contract.

41-year-old Given has spent the majority of his two years at the Britannia Stadium as deputy to number one Jack Butland and made just eight league appearances in that time.

The league's most experienced goalkeeper joined up with his former boss at Manchester City, Mark Hughes, when he joined Stoke at the beginning of the 2015-16 season from Aston Villa.

Given began his senior career in Scotland with Celtic but, after failing to make the first team under Kenny Dalglish, Given signed for Blackburn Rovers in 1994.

He spent time on loan at Swindon Town and Sunderland over the following two seasons, helping the latter to promotion as Championship winners, before signing for local rivals Newcastle United.

Given had his most successful and long-term spell with the Magpies, spending 12 seasons on Tyneside and helping them win the Intertoto Cup in 2006 as well as appearing in the Champions League.

The Donegal man joined nouveau riche Manchester City ahead of the 2009-10 season and spent three years at Eastlands, winning an FA Cup medal in 2010-11.

Given amassed 134 caps for Ireland over 21 years, a record second only to Robbie Keane, making his final appearance in the famous 1-0 victory over Germany at the Aviva Stadium in 2015.
