League of Ireland summer transfer window - the key dates explained

The summer is well and truly upon us, in spite of the best efforts of the weather to submerge the country under the sea yesterday, and with it the opening of the transfer window.

Or, more accurately, windows as the overlapping seasons between League of Ireland and amateur levels sees three distinct periods for players to move between clubs at various levels.

We've already seen some movement in the past couple of weeks as Drogheda United moved to sign former Cherry Orchard striker Ryan Masterson from English side Hyde United.

Cork City snapped up former Cobh Ramblers defender Sean O'Mahony from UCC, while striker Steo Donnelly joined Bohemians from AUL Premier A side Usher Celtic.

Key dates:

June 1st – June 30th

The transfer window for amateur players at junior or intermediate level to move clubs opens.

July 1st – July 31st

All players, amateur or professional, can move clubs for the duration of July. This is the only period where players can move from one League of Ireland club to another.

August 1st – August 31st

All out of work professionals can sign for League of Ireland clubs, including any professional whose contract was cancelled on or before July 31st, 2017.
