Athlone Town Stadium 'broken into' and 'files ransacked'

Athlone Town have reported that the club's stadium was broken into over the weekend with documents 'ransacked' and property damaged.

The club revealed the news on Monday evening in a post on Facebook, Athlone Town's preferred and primary means of communication.

According to the post, the intruders damaged internal doors and locks, stole a small amount of money and 'ransacked and scattered around' files.

Club officials are sorting through the files in order to ascertain if any of them were missing and have contacted the Gardaí, and urge anybody would information to do likewise.

The post read: “The Athlone Town Stadium was broken into over the weekend and damage was caused to some of the internal doors and locks.

“A small amount of money was taken and a lot of files were ransacked and scattered around, club officials are currently going through these files to determine what, if anything, was taken.

“We would appeal to anyone who has information in relation to this crime to contact Athlone Garda Station on 090 64 92600 and pass it on no matter how insignificant you may think it is.”

Athlone Town are currently under investigation by the FAI after UEFA passed on information alleging 'irregular betting patterns' on an April defeat to Longford Town.

Since then, the FAI have expanded the investigation to include two further games, neither of which have been named by the association.
