Roddy Collins return to take the reins at Athlone Town

Athlone Town have announced the return of Roddy Collins for his second spell as manager following the recent dismissal of Ricardo Monsanto.

The club, which is under investigation by the FAI following UEFA's observation of 'irregular betting patterns' during a recent defeat to Longford Town, announced the news on Tuesday evening.

The club's players, coaching staff and officials are currently undergoing a round of interviews into the events surrounding that and two other unspecified games.

Collins will not take charge of the side for this evening's visit to Shelbourne, which will be overseen by Ricardo Cravo, but is likely to take charge of next week's home tie with Cabinteely.

The 55-year-old first took charge of the midlands club during the 2013 season where he steered the club to the First Division title before quitting during the off-season and taking over at Derry City.

The Dubliner, who won the Premier Division title with Bohemians in 2000-01, previously played for Athlone near the start of his 18-year playing career in 1983.

In a colourful managerial career, Collins has managed in England with Carlisle United and Malta with Floriana, as well as Shamrock Rovers, Cork City and the now-defunct Monaghan United and Dublin City.

He was most recently in charge of Waterford United, with whom he parted company after two years two games before the conclusion in the 2016 season.
