Midfielder Aaron Brilly leaves Athlone Town

Athlone Town midfielder Aaron Brilly has left the club, according to his father and representative Ger Brilly.

Brilly Sr revealed the news on Twitter on Monday, telling an Athlone fans' account: “Aaron as off [sic] this morning has left Athlone town, had to go to save his season.”

The Dublin-born midfielder joined Athlone ahead of the league season having initially been announced in Cabinteely's squad for a third season.

The 21-year-old had captained Cabinteely during 2016 in the absence of the injured Victor Ekanem and went on to become the club's record appearance-maker that season.

Brilly began his League of Ireland career with Longford Town, making his senior debut off the bench on his 17th birthday before captaining the club's under-19 side.

After a spell in the North with Newry City, Brilly joined the newly-admitted Cabinteely ahead of the 2015 season and went on to make 48 competitive appearances for the club.

He is now on the lookout for a new club when the registration window re-opens in July.
