Gerard Lyttle named as new Sligo boss

Sligo Rovers have announced the appointment of Gerard Lyttle as the club’s new First Team Manager.

 

Lyttle had been in charge of Danske Bank Premiership club Cliftonville for the past two years and had signed a contract until the end of 2018 before he re-signed hours before the announcement.

 

While in charge of Cliftonville, Lyttle led the Belfast club to a fourth-place finish in the Danske Bank Premiership and Europa League qualification in his first season and he departs with them currently fourth as this season comes to a close.

 

Lyttle also won the League Cup in 2016 beating Ards 3-0.

 

Sligo Rovers chairman Martin Heraghty on Friday spoke about the appointment of Lyttle; “Gerard joins us with a good track record from his time with Cliftonville. He is ambitious and eager to bring success to Sligo Rovers. Gerard shares the vision we have for the club.”

 



During his playing career Lyttle played with Celtic, Peterborough United, Northampton Town and Cliftonville, he was while also capped at Northern Ireland under-21 level.
 

After retiring from football Lyttle joined the coaching staff at Cliftonville and was with the club as they won consecutive league titles in 2012-13 and 2013-14. After a short caretaker spell he was named manager in October 2015.
 

Lyttle will take charge of his first Bit o’Red game next Friday when the club visit Drogheda United in the SSE Airtricity League.
