Conor McCormack: 'It's a massive win but it's just another three points'

Conor McCormack has made himself one of the key figures in John Caulfield’s Cork City team this season.

Many City supporters wondered during pre-season where he was going to slot into the system but already it is clear that he is becoming a key player regardless of where he plays for the Leesiders.

“It is always great to beat Dundalk but the most important thing is the three points,” the Louth native told the assembled media.

Playing in a central midfield role instead of right-back, owing to the absence of Greg Bolger, meant the player had to focus on a marking job against the man of the moment Patrick McEleney. The City player did a very good job but said the extensive preparation made his role easier for the game.

“Patrick McEleney is a good player and I think I did a decent job on him. We did a lot of work on it and we did video analysis during the week so that we were set up properly for this game.”

Now, one could be forgiven for being happy at six points clear at this juncture in the season but it is clear that this season they are an ambitious team who are only focused on themselves and not on what other teams are currently doing at present.

“It is a massive win, but the way we look at it is that it is just another three points, we don’t care about Dundalk, they can do whatever they do but we only focus on winning every game and hopefully we will be right up there.”

But before he thought of ways to stop Patrick McEleney attacking in Turner's Cross this afternoon, he had to deal with the loss of former teammate Ryan McBride during the week.

“I came down Sunday evening and I heard the news, and I couldn’t believe it. He was my teammate for 18 months, but not only that he was one of my best mates so it was very hard for a few of us who knew him.’

“Everybody in the League of Ireland community liked him, he was hard as nails and everybody wanted him on their team.

“I went up for the funeral on Thursday so there was a lot of travelling but I had to show my respect.”
