Damien Duff named Shamrock Rovers' under-15 national league coach

Shamrock Rovers have announced former Irish International star Damien Duff as their new under-15 national league coach.

The former Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea and Newcastle United winger finished his playing career with the Hoops at the end of 2015.

Since then, he's worked as a member of Stephen Bradley's backroom team and he will combine this role with coaching the club's first-ever League of Ireland under-15 side.

“Damien is already an integral part of our first team coaching staff and he will combine his existing first team duties with his new role in our Academy,” said academy director Shane Robinson.

“The new U15 National League will begin in August of 2017 and further enhances the pathway young players have to our first team.

“We have repeatedly spoken about the importance of developing our own home grown players and the new under-15 National League programme is a very significant part of our young player’s development.”

Duff, who made 100 appearances and scored eight goals for the Republic of Ireland, is arguably one of the best players to ever represent Ireland on the international stage.

“Damien is one of Ireland’s greatest ever players and his vast experience and knowledge of the game will be of immense benefit to the players and coaches that work with him”.

“His addition to our Academy set-up strengthens an already very talented underage coaching staff which includes a large number with professional playing experience.

“With Phase One of our new training facility in Roadstone only days away from completion, our young players can look forward to working in a top class environment educated by the best coaches that this country has to offer.”

Robinson concluded: “Shamrock Rovers will continue to show an unwavering commitment to improve our club from top to bottom and the news of Damien’s appointment to the Academy is just another example of our pursuit of excellence”.
