Barry Molloy comes out of retirement to re-sign for Finn Harps

Finn Harps have secure the services of experienced midfielder Barry Molloy for the 2017 season after persuading the midfielder to reverse his decision to retire.

The midfielder made 21 appearances for Harps last season and he had originally announced his retirement from senior football in November.

“Barry did announce his retirement in November after our final game against Bohemians. But I have spoken to him in the past couple of weeks and thankfully he has agreed terms for 2017,” manager Ollie Horgan told the club’s website.

“We needed a player of Barry’s experience in that position in central midfield. He played at the top level with Derry City for many years and did a good job for us in 2016.”

The 33-year-old began his career at Derby County in 1999 and spent four years there before signing on loan for Drogheda United, which then became a permanent move for the Derry man in 2004.

The following season he joined his hometown club, Derry City. Molloy’s honours with the Candystripes included five League Cup wins, two FAI Cup triumphs in 2006 and 2012 and a First Division title in 2010.

After nine years, Molloy left Derry and in January 2015 he signed for, NIFL Premiership club, Crusaders, where he would stay until the following November.

Molloy made his League of Ireland return signing for Finn Harps for the 2016 season, helping the Donegal side stay in the Premier Division.

The midfielder has signed up just in time for Harps League of Ireland season opener against Cork City, at Finn Park, on Friday.
