Irish under-21 midfielder Jack Byrne leaves Manchester City for Wigan

Republic of Ireland under-21 midfielder Jack Byrne has signed for Wigan Athletic from Manchester on a three-and-a-half year contract.

The creative Dubliner spent an unhappy first half of the English league season on loan at Blackburn Rovers – managed by former Latics boss Owen Coyle – but was limited to just three league starts.

20-year-old Byrne previously spent the 2015/16 season on loan with Manchester City's feeder club SC Cambuur in the Netherlands' top division, the Eredivisie.

The deal was done late in the day as England's transfer window ticked to a close, and Wigan manager Warren Joyce was happy to get the deal over the line.

“Jack is one for the long-term,” Joyce said.

“[He's] a really hungry player who we feel can develop here over the next few seasons, a real talent.”

Byrne joined the Manchester City academy from St Kevin's Boys as a 15-year-old in 2011, and signed a full professional deal in the summer of 2015.
