Former Ireland underage winger O'Sullivan departs Blackburn Rovers

Former Republic of Ireland under-21 international John O'Sullivan has been released from his Blackburn Rovers contract by mutual consent.

The 23-year-old has spent eight years with the Lancashire club but leaves having made just five first team appearances for the club since debuting as a substitute at the tail end of the 2012-13 season.

Winger O'Sullivan has spent time on loan with Southport, Barnsley, Rochdale, Bury and two spells with Accrington Stanley, where he was most recently before returning to his parent club last week.

In his two stints with the League Two club, the Dubliner made 38 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals.

“Having been at Blackbrun Rovers since I'm 15 years old and coming through the academy with many ups and downs, at this stage of my career I've made the decision to leave the club by mutual consent,” O'Sullivan wrote on Twitter.

“I would just like to thank everyone at Blackburn for giving me the opportunity and a special thanks to all the staff in the background for your hard work throughout these years. I wish the club all the best in the future.”

O'Sullivan rose to prominence in Ireland as a member of Paul Doolin's Republic of Ireland under-19 squad, which also included Jeff Hendrick, that reached the semi-finals of the European Championships in 2011.
