Cobh Ramblers want you to #JoinPaul

Gabbo is coming! GABBO IS COMING! If you remember the 1993 season four finale of the Simpsons, you will recall how a week long advertising blitz stirred Springfield into a frenzy of anticipation at the arrival of something called Gabbo.

 

Speculation was rife and the expectation huge. Gabbo turned out to be a ventriloquist dummy that rivalled the ever popular Krusty the Clown show. If that episode was written today, #GabboIsComing would have been the hashtag to capture the imagination of the Springfield public.

 

Forward 24 years, and a modern day version is playing out in real life. On the 6th January Cobh Ramblers manager Stephen Henderson tweeted:

 

 

A day later and Cobh Ramblers tweeted:

 



 

Without much more than that, the questions began. Who is Paul? What are we joining? Is it free? Can anyone Join Paul? Why are we joining Paul? And then the images started to appear on social media.

 

From misted mirrors to Starbucks cups to fans in Bologna, the images started to pop up.

 



 

 

 

Even the local butcher was eager to #JoinPaul
