Sligo loan Matthew Stevens from Peterborough

Sligo Rovers have signed striker Matthew Stevens on a six-month loan deal from Peterborough United.

The Englishman, who turns 19 next month, joined the Posh at the beginning of the season from Barnet, making his league debut in a 2-0 defeat to Fleetwood Town in October.

However he's made just one appearance since, in the EFL Trophy, and will expect to gain significant experience at senior level with only Raffaele Cretaro and Liam Martin signed up in the forward areas at Sligo so far.

The teenager began his senior career at Barnet in 2014, having spent time with Reading as a trainee, and became the club's youngest-ever player when he made his senior debut aged 16.

He helped the Bees to top the Conference that season, and made ten appearances the following season, scoring his first goal in league football against AFC Wimbledon in January 2016.

It's not the first time that Bit O’ Red boss Dave Robertson has visited his former club for reinforcements, having brought in Kieran Sadlier this time last year on a permanent deal.

Stevens is Sligo's fourth signing of the off-season, joining defender Kyle Callan-McFadden, goalkeeper Shaun Patton and defender Chris Kenny.
